Book by Jean Webster.

This was a delightful audiobook (read by Julia Whelan)! The epistolary format works surprisingly well and Judy’s spunky personality comes shining through. Of course I knew from the start how it would end, but it was still a fun journey. 


Ages 13-adult could enjoy this together, and younger kids could be listening too as there is nothing objectionable.

Note: the movie by the same title (starring Fred Astaire) is quite different and not nearly as good.

 This movie depicts the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel and beat the men’s record in the process. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and marvelled at Trudy’s dedication despite those men who were determined to stop her. The movie is funny and heartwarming, but also eye-opening in terms of the way women and sports were viewed in the early 1900’s. Note: it briefly shows the bare buttocks of a man who swims nude or in a thong.

Tress of the Emerald Sea

 Book by Brandon Sanderson  This was an utterly charming fantasy/adventure that reminded me a lot of The Princess Bride. I plowed through the audiobook in just two days, listening every chance I could! My only complaint is that I wish it were slightly more standalone, rather than assuming the reader is already familiar with Hoid. However, even without that background knowledge, I believe the book would have widespread appeal. Recommended Age 13+

What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions

 Nonfiction book by Randall Monroe. Nonfiction science is not my preferred genre, but my husband and teens found this audiobook hilarious, and even I was amused. The author takes absurd questions and tries to find actual scientific answers to them, leading to some surprising and entertaining results. As an added bonus, the audiobook is read by Wil Wheaton. Fun for a family car trip.
