The True Meaning of Smekday

 Book by Adam Rex.

This is a book unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. It’s got a buddy road trip vibe mixed with hilarious aliens, people, and plot lines. Although I saw the big reveal a mile away, it was very entertaining. I listened to the audiobook and honestly doubt I would have liked it as well in book form. The narrator, Bahni Turpin, was simply spectacular at doing all the character voices. Note: there were a few mild profanities, but IMO this was appropriate for ages 12+. Would be a great road trip listen with teens.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and marvelled at Trudy’s dedication despite those men who were determined to stop her. The movie is funny and heartwarming, but also eye-opening in terms of the way women and sports were viewed in the early 1900’s. Note: it briefly shows the bare buttocks of a man who swims nude or in a thong.

 Book by Brandon Sanderson  This was an utterly charming fantasy/adventure that reminded me a lot of The Princess Bride. I plowed through the audiobook in just two days, listening every chance I could! My only complaint is that I wish it were slightly more standalone, rather than assuming the reader is already familiar with Hoid. However, even without that background knowledge, I believe the book would have widespread appeal. Recommended Age 13+

What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions

 Nonfiction book by Randall Monroe. Nonfiction science is not my preferred genre, but my husband and teens found this audiobook hilarious, and even I was amused. The author takes absurd questions and tries to find actual scientific answers to them, leading to some surprising and entertaining results. As an added bonus, the audiobook is read by Wil Wheaton. Fun for a family car trip.
