The Rag Coat

 Picture book by Lauren Mills.

This is a wordier picture book for upper elementary ages. It’s a lovely historical fiction story of a poor Appalachian girl who can’t go to school because she doesn’t have a coat, and the “quilting mothers” who work together to make her one.

Activity idea: Visit a quilt show or learn to patchwork quilt.

A Wish in the Dark

 Novel by Christina Soontornvat. This was a fabulous, feel-good book! It took a little while to get me hooked, but then I couldn’t put it down. If I had to categorize its genre, I might call it magical realism, or realistic fantasy. It reminded me of “Over the Moon” in some ways, and of “Les Mis” in other ways. Themes include: law vs. justice vs. compassion, what would your blessing/wish for someone be?, one person making a difference, freedom vs. safety, sharing your inner light, choices vs. heredity, etc. No questionable content, other than a reference to someone having an affair (and regretting it). Recommended ages 10-adult.

Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

 Picture book by Eric Litwin. Fun to read story, with a great message about not sweating the small stuff and making lemonade out of life’s lemons. Another highly recommended book in this series is “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons”. The message of that one: “Buttons come and buttons go, but do we cry? Goodness, no! We keep on singing.” There is also some basic subtraction thrown in.
