You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You series

 Series of beginning readers designed for two voices, by Mary Ann Hoberman.

I had a lot of fun reading these with my 5 year old (she's a pretty advanced reader for her age).  These are Aesop's fables written for two voices in short rhymes.  My daughter loved picking which character to be (Tortoise or Hare, Fox or Stork...) The lines are color-coded (ie. you read the orange words, I read the green words, we read the pink words together). If your child is supposed to read aloud to you for homework, this is a really fun way to do it!

A Wish in the Dark

 Novel by Christina Soontornvat. This was a fabulous, feel-good book! It took a little while to get me hooked, but then I couldn’t put it down. If I had to categorize its genre, I might call it magical realism, or realistic fantasy. It reminded me of “Over the Moon” in some ways, and of “Les Mis” in other ways. Themes include: law vs. justice vs. compassion, what would your blessing/wish for someone be?, one person making a difference, freedom vs. safety, sharing your inner light, choices vs. heredity, etc. No questionable content, other than a reference to someone having an affair (and regretting it). Recommended ages 10-adult.

Safety

 This is a Disney sports drama, based on the true story of a college football player who becomes the legal guardian of his little brother, and struggles to balance school, football, and parenting. It is a fantastic movie with messages about the importance of family, education, hard work, and community.

Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

 Picture book by Eric Litwin. Fun to read story, with a great message about not sweating the small stuff and making lemonade out of life’s lemons. Another highly recommended book in this series is “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons”. The message of that one: “Buttons come and buttons go, but do we cry? Goodness, no! We keep on singing.” There is also some basic subtraction thrown in.
