I, Juan de Pareja

This is a novel by Elizabeth Borton de Treviño

I loved this book! It is based on the true story of the Spanish painter Diego Velasquez and his slave Juan de Pareja whom he frees and makes his assistant. I love the friendship between these two men, the insights into slavery and race relations, and the philosophy that art should depict truth rather than false beauty. Appropriate for all ages in terms of content, this could be enjoyed by young and old alike.
