Homeless Bird

 Novel by Gloria Whelan.

This was a quick and utterly captivating story about a young teen in India who finds herself married and almost immediately widowed in a culture where widows are deemed worthless. After several years of struggle, quite a bit of good luck, and a lot of hard work, she is able to make a future for herself again. The peek into a culture and traditions so different from our own was really eye-opening. And there was nothing objectionable or too "adult" in terms of content, so I can wholeheartedly recommend it to ages 10+.
