Catherine’s War

 Graphic novel by Julia Billet.

This was a wonderful graphic novel based on the life of the author’s mother, a Jewish girl in wartime France who was hidden from the Nazis by several people. I loved the portrayal of the many people willing to risk their lives to save these Jewish children, and I loved how the main character used photography to capture her experiences. Simply lovely, with no objectionable material.

Activity idea: Take a photography class OR go on a photo scavenger hunt together.

A Wish in the Dark

 Novel by Christina Soontornvat. This was a fabulous, feel-good book! It took a little while to get me hooked, but then I couldn’t put it down. If I had to categorize its genre, I might call it magical realism, or realistic fantasy. It reminded me of “Over the Moon” in some ways, and of “Les Mis” in other ways. Themes include: law vs. justice vs. compassion, what would your blessing/wish for someone be?, one person making a difference, freedom vs. safety, sharing your inner light, choices vs. heredity, etc. No questionable content, other than a reference to someone having an affair (and regretting it). Recommended ages 10-adult.

 This is a Disney sports drama, based on the true story of a college football player who becomes the legal guardian of his little brother, and struggles to balance school, football, and parenting. It is a fantastic movie with messages about the importance of family, education, hard work, and community.

Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

 Picture book by Eric Litwin. Fun to read story, with a great message about not sweating the small stuff and making lemonade out of life’s lemons. Another highly recommended book in this series is “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons”. The message of that one: “Buttons come and buttons go, but do we cry? Goodness, no! We keep on singing.” There is also some basic subtraction thrown in.
